Invisalign: It's Not Just for Teens

Quick, what’s the first age group you think of when someone mentions orthodontics and teeth straightening?
Teenagers, right? Braces are almost a rite of passage for many teens. But here’s the thing. With the advent of Invisalign (clear plastic aligners that are much less obvious than braces), the game has changed. Orthodontic treatment is now much more widely available for both younger and older patients.
Our team at Portrait Dental is passionate about reaching as many people as possible to create a better life for them. Here’s why Invisalign is not just for teens.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic trays that gradually align and straighten your teeth. There are no brackets or wires such as those used in traditional braces. The trays simply fit snugly over your upper and lower teeth. Your custom trays will be based on a digital scan of your mouth.
You wear each set of trays for one to two weeks before switching to the next set, which adjusts your teeth a little more. You should wear them for 20-22 hours each day for maximum effect. The trays are designed for easy removal, allowing you to eat or drink, or for special events.
Who is Invisalign for?
Teens are the traditional audience for braces. They’re still an option, but many teens are now choosing to wear Invisalign because they are much more discreet and comfortable. A treatment called Invisalign First is designed for younger patients aged 6-10 as well.
And, Invisalign has grown in popularity among adults who want to build a better smile. The trays are virtually unnoticeable, food restrictions are no longer a problem because you simply take them out for meals, and they’re much more comfortable than braces.
The average Invisalign treatment lasts 12-18 months, but age can affect this timeline. The timetable for teenagers is usually faster because their teeth move easily, while older adults can take longer because their teeth move more slowly. Older adults are also more likely to have dental issues that must be addressed before they wear Invisalign, including cavities and gum disease.
Invisalign is designed for mild-to-moderate orthodontic issues such as crowding, spacing issues, or small misalignments. More major issues, such as severe overbites or underbites, may still require braces for the most effective treatment.
If you’re interested in Invisalign (no matter what age you are), our team at Portrait Dental would love to help you accomplish your goals. To schedule an appointment, call our Katy office or request a specific time with our online scheduler.
